My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
First I went to college without any idea of it being connected to a career but studied what I loved.
2.
Then to earn a living I got a teaching credential and found apathy on too many faces in my classes.
3.
I decided, out of desperation, to start genuine discussions into why they did not want to learn.
4.
Then my husband died suddenly leaving me with 3 teenagers to coach into adulthood on my own.
5.
I identified a huge hole in our system around helping kids plan how to use education to build a life.
6.
Then my children started high school and I knew that no class, no one there was going to help them.
7.
I created a class and for over a decade I've been working with teens creating and improving it.
8.
Each step eventually became my workbook, "Get Real!" currently in process of publication.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
Just teach what you're supposed to teach. You are just one little voice in a huge world, you will not be heard. Every other generation has just gone out and made a living...why make it more complex? Publishers have told me there is no market for my book.
How I responded:
To be honest, I haven't overcome the noise. I hear it from outside and inside, every single day, however, sometimes it motivates me to fight a bit harder...push a bit further than I would that day. It also prompts me to keep working to believe in myself. Believe that one person truly can do something valuable and change millions of lives. I keep a list on my dashboard of my car, computer desktop and bathroom mirror, of people who HAVE done just that. Helped change the world and my name is on there!
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
When I lost my soul-mate so young, I couldn't see much reason to care about anything other than my children. Because my children lost their father, I feared deeply they wouldn't care about life and be open to loving. I had to show them by living it.
