Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Family:

My parents were always generally supportive of me being a musician. However, after my mom died, my dad really pressured me to stick around and help take care of him and my brother.

  • How I responded:

It was tough, but I figured out how to balance my family obligations and my need to create music. I just made sure I managed my time efficiently. I helped out my family, but I also made time for myself. Being the responsible person in your family can be both a blessing and a curse. You just have to stay calm and focused. Be honest with your family about your goals, and share your passion with them. If they get it, they will enjoy the ride with you. If not, at least you made an effort.

  • Being the daughter of my family, I was expected to find a husband, get married, have kids, and assimilate. Although I did find a husband, I followed my own path and did not submit to a traditional life. I found a fellow creative, supportive human.
